Healthy Food Policy

The Yuba Sutter Food Bank is dedicated to supporting the health and well-being of our community by increasing access to nutritious food. This policy outlines our commitment to promoting food security while encouraging healthy eating habits through the food we provide.

Objectives

  1. Emphasize Nutritional Quality

    • We aim to include an ample portion of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and low-fat dairy products in our food offerings.

    • We strive to limit foods and beverages that are high in added sugars, sodium, and unhealthy fats, while recognizing the importance of balance and variety in meeting our clients’ needs.

  2. Support Food Variety

    • We seek to offer a broad range of food options that reflect the diverse dietary needs and cultural preferences of our community.

    • Whenever possible, we aim to include vegetarian, vegan, and allergy-sensitive choices (e.g., gluten-free or lactose-free items).

  3. Educate and Support Clients

    • We aim to provide access to nutrition information, cooking tips, and meal planning resources to support clients in making informed food choices.

    • We strive to collaborate with local nutrition experts to share knowledge and guidance through workshops and community outreach.

  4. Collaborate with Local Producers

    • We aim to build relationships with local farms, community gardens, and producers to increase access to fresh, seasonal foods.

    • We also encourage healthy food donations from local businesses and community members.

  5. Promote Sustainability

    • We strive to adopt environmentally responsible practices, such as reducing food waste through composting and recycling initiatives.

    • When feasible, we aim to prioritize organic and minimally processed foods.

  6. Commit to Continuous Improvement

    • We aim to regularly assess the nutritional quality of our food offerings and welcome feedback from clients to help guide improvements.

    • We use client input and available data to inform our food sourcing and distribution strategies over time.
